Help for the handy helper
The other day, my colleague Arash brought his treasured cutting board made of bamboo into work. Sadly, not because he wanted to throw a spontaneous cooking session in the office with me, but because his wooden kitchen aid urgently needed a touch-up:
The cutting board had literally bent over backwards due to its daily use. Over time, moisture had penetrated into the material, which eventually caused the board to bend. As a result, the front ledge of the cutting board, which had been bonded insufficiently by the producer, had become loose.
Instead of buying a new cutting board – according to the motto “it’s still as good as new“ – Arash had the idea to fix his old one with one of our WEICON products. No sooner said than done!
Bonding the cutting board with our WEICON Fast-Bond Assembly Adhesive
Why Fast-Bond?
For the repair, we used our fast-curing and high-strength WEICON Fast-Bond Assembly Adhesive. Reason number one: It is perfect for bonding wooden materials. Reason number two: It is weather-resistant and waterproof – which means it is resistant to the inevitable moisture the cutting board is exposed to. In addition, the colour of the adhesive is beige, so potential adhesive residues are almost invisible on the board.
The application
And this is how you apply our Assembly Adhesive:
After inserting the cartridge into the cartridge gun, apply the adhesive evenly and preferably in wave-shaped beads to the bonding surface of the front ledge.
Then attach the ledge to the cutting board. With a few gentle hammer blows, you can ensure the cutting board and the front ledge to be securely joined on the whole surface.
Now, fixate both elements with screw clamps and leave them to cure.
While curing, the adhesive swells, which means at first, a small amount of the Fast-Bond leaks out of the adhesive gap. That’s no reason to worry, with a spatula and our WEICON Surface Cleaner you can roughly remove the adhesive residues.
The fine tuning comes next, after the adhesive is fully cured. After approx. 48 hours, you can easily remove the remaining adhesive residues with the help of a box cutter. Who, like me, is a perfectionist can also sand down the bonding afterwards.
For Arash to still be able to enjoy his cutting board for a long time, he also oils the dry wood on the edges with our WEICON Bio-Fluid. This acid-free and medically pure white oil reduces wear and is also solvent-free, odourless and tasteless and water-repellent.
So with little effort, my colleague Arash saved his bamboo cutting board from being tossed away.
