Dutch bike restoration – turning old into new

WEICON products help restore a 1958 Dutch bike to its new shine

In a cycling city like Münster, a functioning bike is an absolute must. That’s why my colleague Michael has refurbished his old Dutch bike.

Although it didn’t look promising at first, he was able to nevertheless save the rusty Dutch bike from 1958. After a few hours of careful work, it was shining again in a trendy retro style. His most important helpers: WEICON products.

The individual steps explained in detail

The frame: freed from rust to a new shine

After the complete disassembly, Michael began to refurbish the frame. First, he removed the old layer of paint by hand and then cleaned the surface with WEICON Surface Cleaner. He then repaired small damaged areas with WEICON Repair Stick Steel.

After another cleaning, he applied a step-by-step coating with WEICON Rust Protection 2000 PLUS in anthracite. Because the spray ensures optimum protection and an even finish.

The attachment parts carefully restored

Afterwards, Michael turned his attention to the smaller add-on parts, including the chain guard, sprockets, trim parts, rims and moreover the brakes. Afterwards, all components were thoroughly cleaned with the surface cleaner.

For a fresh look, he primed the sprockets and decorative parts with WEICON Zinc Spray and then painted them with WEICON Aluminium Spray A100. He also replaced the brake cables and their protective covers to ensure the safety of the Dutch bike.

Final assembly: the bike comes back to life

After all the parts had been prepared, Michael reassembled the frame. So he fitted the headset bearings, the bottom bracket and the wheels and greased all the bearings with WEICON AL-F.

After that he fitted the handlebar grips, the bell and the front brake. The new mudguards and wheels were also supplied and fitted with new tubes and tyres.

Before the chain was fitted, Michael treated it with WEICON chain and rope lube spray. He has attached the chain guard. Finally, he added the fairing parts, the headlights and the saddle.
