Do you know this too? You have assembled and disassembled a wardrobe for so many times that one or the other hinge has broken or the screw holes got frayed. The door then hangs more or less on the hinge and threatens to fall off every time you open it. Does that mean that you’ll have to throw the wardrobe away and buy a new one? No, fortunately there’s a cheaper solution! We’ll tell you how to fix door hinges in this blog post.
Broken door hinge – what to do?
If you want to fix broken hinges, first remove the entire door. This will give you enough work space for the next steps. Then put the hinges and screws aside and take a look at the broken wood areas. Are only the screw holes frayed so that the screws no longer grip properly? Or is the hinge also broken out towards the edge (as with this pot hinge hole)? Either way, well show you how the repair works.
Fix door hinges – that’s how it’s done
You don’t need an extra door hinge repair kit to fix the broken wood areas.
All you need is our WEICON Repair Stick Wood. This two-component repair putty is ideal for repairing bore holes and broken-off wooden parts.
Step 1: Prepare repair putty
Step one when you want to repair your cupboard hinge is as follows: Put on disposable gloves so that your skin does not get into contact with the glue. Then cut off the appropriate amount of the Repair Stick Wood and knead it until you get a homogeneous mass. As the two components of the repair putty are coloured differently, you can see exactly when the mixture is ready to be applied to your broken hinge holes.
Step 2: Fill hinge and screw holes
Now fill the repair putty into the frayed holes or use it to improve other areas of the broken hinge hole. As soon as all holes are filled, you can relax for about an hour – this is how long the putty needs to cure.
Step 3: Drilling new holes
Now grab a wood drill with the right diameter for the screws (in our case 4 mm) and drill new holes into the cured door hinge filler. Then you can put the pot hinge back into the hole provided for it and turn the screws into the freshly drilled holes. This is the point at which you will recognize that the screws are gripping properly again and the hinge no longer wobbles! Finished? Then you can put the door back in place. Your wardrobe should now be fully functional again. This is how easy it is to fix door hinges!
