Another summer is nearing its end – and with it, another bathing season, too. Now the swimming pool, which offered a refreshing break during hot days just a few weeks ago, is looking deserted, standing in your garden all alone. When you eventually accept the fact that outdoor temperatures will most likely not shoot up over 20 degrees again this year, you start to disassemble the pool. And that is when you notice it: rust has started to form on the pool poles! But don’t worry – with our tips, you can put a stop to the unwelcome metal enemy fast and easily. We also show you how to prevent rust on swimming pool poles altogether!
Causes of rust on pool poles
Even though producers of swimming pools with metal frames often advertise the fact that their pool poles are coated with an anti-corrosion agent, this often doesn’t provide sufficient protection. It’s not uncommon that only the outside of the metal is powder-coated. So on the inside and on the edges, rust can happily spread across the metal, as soon as it comes into contact with moisture.
It can also happen that you damage the thin protective coating covering the metal during assembly. In this case, rust also has it pretty easy.
With these tips you can fight rust!
Removing rust on swimming pool poles
If you want to enjoy your swimming pool for a long time, you need to neutralise the rusty spots on the frame.
To remove rust from pool poles, we recommend our WEICON Rust Converter. The spray forms a metallic-organic iron complex and has a good weather and UV resistance.
So what exactly do you need to do? Just a few simple steps. First, clean the rusty parts with our WEICON Surface Cleaner. Next, apply the Rust Converter. The black layer which then forms serves as primer for the subsequent, pemanent coating.
By which we mean our WEICON Corro-Protection. As the name already tells, the spray provides long-lasting corrosion protection. It forms an invisible protective film on the metal and thus prevents new rust.

Preventing rust on pool poles
If you don’t want to give rust on pool poles any chance in the first place, use our Corro-Protection prior to filling the pool for the first time. If you apply the spray to any unpainted metal surfaces, you have a high-quality corrosion protection.
Storing a swimming pool corrrectly
- Clean the inside and the outside of the pool thoroughly. Dried dirt and mud have the same effect as sandpaper and damage the sensitive pool liner.
- Dry the pool thoroughly after cleaning to prevent mould.
- Protect the frost-sensitive liner from low temperatures. It’s best to choose a dry place, where temperatures don’t drop below six degrees.
