Cleaning and bonding – the yin and yang in the world of adhesives
There are certain things that just belong together. What would salt be without pepper, summer without sun, movies without popcorn, day without night? In this list of inseperable couples, adhesive bonding and cleaning also deserve a special place. As the saying goes: The two have great chemistry. Which, in this case, is true in both senses of the phrase.
That is why we can’t stress enough: The adhesive can be perfectly suitable for your application – but if you don’t clean the surface thouroughly first, you won’t be able to achieve perfect adhesion.
The enemies of adhesive bonding
A common mistake: Just because you don’t see any dirt, it doesn’t mean there isn’t any. While dust belongs to the more obvious enemies of adhesive bonding, there are also soilings which are harder to see. These include greases, oils, silicone sprays etc. All of these are release agents. As the name already tells, they are not exactly beneficial to adhesive bondings and thus definitely need to be removed before bonding. My advice to you: Generally assume there are some soilings and always clean the surface, if possible!
Squeaky clean – not just for adhesive bondings
Clean surfaces, however, are not just essential for adhesive bondings. In many companies, clean surfaces and machines are an absolute must. That applies especially to the food production industry. Yet, a little shine and sparkle is nice for private households, too.
But what cleans surfaces best, whether it is for pretreating bonding surfaces or just for care and maintenance? A bit of spit is certainly not the way to go.
